I don’t know if I can count the times I have been told something similar to, “If normal and civilized Muslims would like to have their voices heard that Islam is a peaceful religion, then Muslims should speak out more and publicly stand against things like terrorism!” The latest was less than 48 hours ago.
This is a problematic and short-sighted point-of-view. Muslim individuals and organizations (e.g., Shura Council, CAIR, MPAC, Fiqh Council, and mosques) constantly scream (through press releases, website and community forum postings, newspapers) “They [terrorists] are not us nor do they represent what we believe!” But media on channel after channel, paper after paper, and station after station are hell bent on sensationalizing what Muslims do as long as it fits into and perpetuates the stereotype of the crazed, “west”-hating Muslim who wants to take over this country and re-create a Muslim Caliphate.
To the people who share this stance:
Why are you not expecting the same kind of conduct from media? Have media stand up and show the whole story. Why are they not showing the regular Muslims working hard, being law-abiding citizens, and volunteering in soup kitchens on the news? Why do you not hold media accountable? How many Muslim protests would be covered in the mainstream media if they cannot even publish the press releases and editorials that are continuously offered, especially after events like at Fort Hood?
There was a Muslim unity prayer held in DC recently that was not well-covered by mainstream media, but had it been the same amount of Muslims gathered to support terrorism or criticize the war on terror, media would have been all over that “breaking news” like flies on dog shit under the summer sun.
To what extent are all “normal” Muslims responsible to educate you about what Islam is really about? To what extent should you take responsibility and accountability for what you believe, whom you let influence your beliefs, and where you get your biased news sources from?
Es lohnt sich, den Artikel bis zu Ende zu lesen.
